Survey says majority believe US is in mental health crisis: Does Boston psychiatrist agree?

MARIA: A NATIONAL SURVEY FINDS NEARLY ALL AMERICANS BELIEVE THE US IS IN THE THICK OF A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS. HERE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS IS DR. MANUEL PACHECO, A PSYCHIATRIST AT TUFTS MEDICAL CENTER. GOOD TO SEE YOU, DOCTOR. ED: LET’S TALK ABOUT THESE NEW RESULTS FROM THE KAISER FAMILY FOUNDATION. NINE OUT OF 10 O ADULTS, NOT A PERCENT, SO AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY, SAY THE COUNTRY IS EXPERIENCING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS. DOES THAT PERCEPTION MATCH REALITY? WHAT DOES THE DATA SHOW? >> UNFORTUNATELY, THE PERCEPTION OF PEOPLE DOES MATCH THE REALITY THAT WE FIND OURSELVES IN EVEN BEFORE THE REALLY INCREASED STRESSORS DURING THE PANDEMIC THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH SPECIALIZED PSYCHIATRIC AND SUBSTANCE DISORDER BEDS FOR PEOPLE OR MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIANS TO TREAT THEM. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN MADE WORSE BECAUSE A LOT OF UNITS HAD TO DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF PATIENTS THEY COULD TREAT TO MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING AND THERE OFTEN CLOSE TO NEW ADMISSIONS BECAUSE OF COVID OUTBREAKS. MARIA: YOU HAVE TREATED PATIENTS BEFORE COVID COME AFTER COVID. AND YOUR EXPERIENCE, THIS CAN BE HARD TO MEASURE, BUT YOU’RE THE EXPERT, WHICH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ARE WORSE NOW THAN THEY WERE BEFORE? WHAT YOU ARE SEEING? >> FIRST, THANK YOU FOR CALLING AN EXPERT IN ANYTHING. BASICALLY, THE TWO BIG MAIN AREAS WHERE WE HAVE SEEN DIFFICULTIES IS SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS AND HOPEFULLY WE HAVE SEEN THE PEAK OF OPIOID OVERDOSE DEATHS ACROSS OUR COUNTRY AND EVERYBODY WATCHING THIS STORY KNOW SOMEBODY THAT IS EITHER STRUGGLING CURRENTLY WITH A PROBLEM OR HAVE AN PARTIALLY PASSED AWAY. THAT IS BECAUSE OF DECREASED ACCESS TO TREATMENT AND INCREASED ISOLATION DURING THE PANDEMIC FOR THIS CRISIS. SECONDLY, THE OTHER MAIN AREAS, ANXIETY. THIS IS TIGHTLY RELATED TO THE INCREASED FINANCIAL STRESSORS AND THE SOCIAL ISOLATION THAT WE ARE ALL FACING IN THIS PANDEMIC AND ALSO DIFFICULTIES WITH THE ECONOMY. BUT I THINK EVEN THOUGH A LOT OF SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN LIFTED, A LOT OF PEOPLE STILL DON’T ACCOUNTABLE GATHERING IN LARGE GROUPS AND THAT DECREASES THE AMOUNT OF ACTIVITIES LIKE SPORTS OR OTHER SOCIAL ACTIVITIES THAT WERE BIG PART OF STRESS RELIEF. ED: DOCTOR, YOU JUST TOUCHED ON IT. YOU SAID THE WORD “FINANCIAL.” MOST ADULTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE COST OF GETTING TREATED FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WHETHER HEALTH INSURANCE OFFERS ENOUGH COVERAGE. HONESTLY, THE ANSWER IS USUALLY NO. DO YOU AGREE THAT’S A PROBLEM? >> I COMPLETELY APPROVED. SOMEHOW MORE THAN TWO DECADES AGO, HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES AND THE GOVERNMENT THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO HANDLE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER TREATMENT VASTLY DIFFERENT THAN OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU SHOW UP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, THE CLINICIANS EVALUATING YOU ARE REQUIRED TO GO THROUGH A LONG AND CONFUSING NECESSITY OF EMERGENCY TREATMENT. THIS IS EVEN THE CASE WHEN SOMEONE COMES IN AFTER ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. IT IS REALLY DISAPPOINTING. BEFORE WE GO, I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE ABOUT THE 988 HO TLINE. IF YOU OR ANYONE IS EXPRESSING I’M MAZZAGLIA CRISIS, PLEASE CALL THAT AND GET THE HELP YOU NEED. — IF YOU ARE IN WHEN YOU KNOW IS EXPERIENCING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, PLEASE CALL THAT AND GET THE HELP YOU NEED. MARIA: TO OUR VIEWERS, IF YOU HAVE MENTAL HEALTH QUESTIONS THAT YOU’D LIKE OUR EXPERTS
